Did You Know?
In July 1845, the New York newspaper editor John L. O'Sullivan coined the phrase, "Manifest Destiny", as the "design of Providence" supporting the territorial expansion of the United States. Manifest Destiny had serious consequences for Native Americans, since continental expansion for the United States took place at the cost of their occupied land. A justification for the policy of conquest and subjugation of the indigenous people emanated from the stereotyped perceptions of all Native Americans as "merciless Indian savages." The Indian Appropriations Act of 1851 set the precedent for modern-day Native American reservations through allocating funds to move western tribes onto reservations since there were no more lands available for relocation.

Last year, Lake Edge sent 113 Personal Care Kits to LWR (Lutheran World Relief). We are now collecting items for this year.
There are only five items in the Personal Care Kits:
Bath Towel (20”x40”to52”x27” new, light weight, dark colors recommended)
Toothbrush (adult size only)
Soap (Bath-size- 4oz to 5oz size - 2 bars per kit)
Any of these items would be appreciated. The basket for these items is on the bookcase shelf leading to the library. Thanks for your help. Global Outreach.
Knitters & Crocheters
This year, 2016, we knit more mittens, hats, and scarves than ever before. Our grand total of Hats distributed this year was 324. All were given to people who didn’t have proper cold weather protection including children and youth in Head Start and 4K through elementary school; and adults. We have just distributed hats, scarves and mittens to 5 different Elementary schools in Madison including Glendale, Hawthorne, Lowell, Schenk, and Lindburgh schools. From this total, D’neece Hettrick’s Operation Fresh Start group also received hats and mittens. Residents of the Triangle (located in the area of Regent, S. Park Street, and W. Washington Ave) along with adults at the Jail, River Food Pantry, Belmont Nursing Home, and Karmenta Nursing Home received sets of Hats and scarves. And sets of Hats and Mittens were given to a 4-K Head start program in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This year, we have sent 65 baby blankets and 22 baby hats to Global Health Ministries (Minnesota) which they send to their Global Partners in developing countries. And we had lap robes or prayer shawls available in November. Some are still available in the Luther room (off the Library) just help yourself. We have been busy. We also knit Baby Hats for our Lake Edge babies. Thanks to funds from Thrivent and one of our knitters, Judy Davidson has purchased yarn. Yarn that you have donated has also been put to great use. Thank you.
We meet every Monday at 1 pm in the Library. All are welcome. If you can’t meet at this time, patterns and yarn are available. Contact Bonnie Gudmandsen or Joan Martin. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry.

Centering Prayer is a contemporary name for the practice that Jesus refers to as “prayer in secret” in the Sermon on the Mount. It responds to the invitation in Psalm 46:10, which reads “Be still and know that I am God.” It is a practice of simply opening oneself to God, consenting to his presence and the transformation process. With no direct cause and effect, its sole purpose is to deepen one’s relationship with God. What happens is not in our control nor our motive for practicing Centering Prayer. If you have questions, Ron and Judy invite you to come to the class to ask them. Contact Lucy Gibson 608-221-3258. We meet at 9:30 am during the school year and 8:30 am during the summer.
