Did You Know?
Did you know that slavery still exists, in the form of human trafficking? Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labour, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others (Wikipedia). It is a multi-billion dollar business, though the average cost of a human trafficking victim is only $90. (For comparison, the average slave in 1800 America cost the equivalent to $40,000.) Human trafficking gets a lot of attention around the Super Bowl, but it is a problem every day of the year, around the world. You can help by reporting suspicious incidents to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 888-373-7888. Learn more at https://www.doj.state.wi.us/ocvs/human-trafficking.
January Artist of the Month: Anne
Anne Anderson, a new member of Lake Edge, will display her watercolors for the month of January. Anne is an artist who expresses her feelings in free-flowing watercolors. She is a former elementary art teacher who still loves the joy and excitement that watercolor allows the student and artist! “Painting becomes play, I never know what is coming next. I love bright colors and the natural flow that watercolor allows.” Anne is available for private beginning watercolor lessons.
Join Anne for a reception to talk about her artwork on Sunday, January 21 at 9:30 am in the Library.
Cristo Rey Scholarship Program
Lake Edge has had a relationship with Cristo Rey in Santa Ana, El Salvador for 25 years. Several years ago we asked Pr. Carlos how we could help them. He said the best thing we could do was to provide an education for the children. Education is not mandatory and requires the student to wear a uniform and have their own school supplies. The cost to send a child to school is about $100.00, a month’s income for a family. Every fall Lake Edge members provide scholarship funds, which are wired to Cristo Rey in January before the start of their school year. We have been able to support around 150 children each year. Some of the children have actually been able to pursue educational opportunities after high school. If you wish to participate in this program, please identify your donation as Cristo Rey Scholarship. There are cards in the fellowship area if you wish to donate in someone’s name as an alternative holiday gift.
