Did You Know?
Did you know that Sunday School began as a way to teach working children to read and write? In the late 1700s, many children in working-class families would work 12 hours a day, leaving no time for school or other pursuits. By offering an education on Sundays, when factories were closed, church leaders helped generations of working children learn to read and write and have a basic knowledge of the Bible.

Hurricane Harvey Relief
Hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast of the United States on Aug. 25, 2017, threatening millions of people with multiple days of heavy rain, winds and rising tides. While many have evacuated, thousands of people may be housed in shelters for an extended period of time. Lutheran Disaster Response’s affiliate is actively present, collaborating with community leaders and officials to initiate the proper responses, particularly the long-term recovery efforts. Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected through every phase of this disaster. We invite you to stand by our neighbors on the Gulf Coast during this time. Your financial gifts allow our church to provide help and hope for those left homeless or otherwise affected for years to come. Gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response, designated for "Hurricane Response – United States" will be used entirely (100%) for this disaster until the response is complete. Together, we can help provide immediate and long-lasting support. Give today to support the needs in this response and others like it. Thank you for your generosity! Make checks payable to Lutheran Disaster Response and mail to:

Preaching Forum
Thursday, October 12 at 6:00 pm
Thursday, October 9 at Noon

The pastoral support committee is hosting two congregational forums concerning the preaching at Lake Edge over the past three years, and its relationship to our congregational Vision Statement. The forums will be held Thursday, October 12, from 6:00-6:45 pm; and Thursday, October 19, from 12 noon-12:45 pm in the sanctuary. All congregational members are welcome to attend. There will be three guided questions that will help to frame the discussions. The questions are available for those who prefer or need to provide written opinions. The questions can also be found on our website and can be responded to on line, click here. The impetus for these forums is connected to Pr. Stephen’s Doctor of Ministry work. However, it is also a wonderful opportunity for you to be heard concerning the preached word at Lake Edge. Please consider being a part of this effort. A big “thank you” from Pr. Stephen to all who are able to participate.

Preparing to be Partners:
Conversations on Being White
Tuesdays, October 3 - November 14 at 7:00 pm
St. Anderw's Episcopal Church

Part of the challenge of engaging the racial disparities in Madison involves our willingness, and our ability, to get to know, and learn to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of color. You are invited to participate in a series of conversations at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent St. on the history and cultural identity of white people in the US. The series began Oct. 3 with a lecture by Dr. Damon Sagnani, Assistant Professor of African Cultural Studies at UW, teaching a course called “The Problem of Whiteness.” This course focuses on how race is experienced by white people and how institutional racism is consciously and unconsciously perpetuated. Those who wish to explore the issues further will meet the following six Tuesdays (Oct. 10-Nov. 14); 7 to 9 pm. To make sure we have enough materials for the later sessions, sign up with Leanne Puglielli at or call 608-886-3737.
